The answer at the top of Google looks free until an ad moves in beside it. Featured snippets taught businesses to win that answer with a clear sentence; AI Overviews now reward much of the same work, with advertisers following close behind.

Read the dates in order. Google gives searchers an answer before they need to open a result, then finds room for paid placements around that behavior. The organic listing moves farther from the first thing a searcher sees. If you want a citation in an AI answer, the old snippet discipline is a good place to start. Waiting until the paid space gets crowded is the expensive alternative.

## 2014: Featured snippets put the answer above the links

Google put [answer boxes at the top of organic results in 2014](https://www.practicalecommerce.com/seo-for-featured-snippets), pulling a paragraph, list or table from a page and displaying it above the familiar links. A page still needed to be a credible search result. Then it needed to make the answer easy to extract: a clear heading, a direct response and a format suited to the question.

That last part sounds trivial until you look at how many pages make a reader work for one sentence. A definition buried after a brand story is hard to lift. A how-to answer written as six paragraphs of introduction is hardly a how-to answer. The pages built for snippets put the useful material where Google could find it quickly.

The trade appeared at the same time as the opportunity. A snippet could give your page prominent exposure while also satisfying the searcher before the click. **Winning the answer did not guarantee winning the visit.** For practitioners, that meant treating the box as its own outcome, not merely as a prettier version of a page-one ranking. The practical move was to answer the question plainly first, then give people a reason to open the page for the detail.

## 2015: People Also Ask made the next question visible

Google launched [People Also Ask as expandable question boxes in 2015](https://searchengineland.com/googles-people-also-ask-search-feature-officially-gains-dynamic-loading-269299). In February 2017, the boxes began dynamically loading more questions on desktop and mobile. A search could now lead into a chain of follow-ups without sending the searcher to another site.

For a practitioner, this changed the unit of work. One head term was no longer the whole assignment. A page explaining a service might also need to answer what it costs, how it works and how it compares with the obvious alternative. Clear H2s helped separate those answers so each could stand on its own. Padding a page with loosely related questions did not make it useful; covering the questions a buyer actually asks did.

**Write for the question cluster, not just the first query.** That is the bridge from snippets to AI answers: the system needs material for the follow-up as well as the opening response. If a page answers only the term in its title, it leaves the rest of that conversation to somebody else.

## 2016: Fewer desktop ad slots pushed organic results down

On February 19, 2016, Google [confirmed the removal of right-rail text ads on desktop](https://searchengineland.com/243057-243057?src=newsletter). Highly commercial queries could instead show up to four text ads above organic results and three at the bottom. The change removed a set of side placements while giving the top of the page more weight.

This was not an ad _inside_ a featured snippet, and it should not be sold as one. It showed the other half of the answer-box problem: as Google rearranged the results page, being an organic result and being visible near the top became less interchangeable. A business could hold its ranking and still have more to compete with above it.

For paid-search teams, the top placements mattered more. For organic teams, position alone told less of the story. **Measure what appears before your result, not just where your result ranks.** When an answer, ads and other features sit ahead of a page, a clean ranking report can conceal an awkward amount of scrolling.

## 2022: Perplexity made cited answers a separate destination

[Perplexity launched as a public beta answer engine in December 2022](https://entrepreneurloop.com/perplexity-ai-origin-story/), summarizing web results and showing inline citations. This was not another Google results-page feature. It mattered to the timeline because it made the cited answer the main experience rather than a box above a list of links.

The practitioner’s question changed accordingly. It was no longer only, “Can this page rank for the query?” It was also, “Can an answer system use this page to support a specific statement?” A page that names the subject, states the answer and then supplies the detail is easier to use than one that makes the system infer what the business is trying to say.

**A citation is not a ranking in miniature.** It is a place in a composed answer, and different answer surfaces can choose different sources. That is a reason to make important claims legible on the page, not a reason to promise that one formatting change will put a business everywhere.

## 2023: Search Generative Experience combined several sources

Google launched [Search Generative Experience as a Search Labs pilot on May 10, 2023](https://www.techopedia.com/definition/googles-search-generative-experience-sge). It brought AI-generated summaries, follow-up questions and product breakdowns into an experimental search experience. Instead of lifting one passage into a snippet, the system could combine information from several pages and display sources alongside its answer.

That changed what a page-one ranking could tell you. A strong conventional result might not be used in the generated response. Another page might supply a concise fact or step that fitted the answer better. The record here does not give practitioners a reliable formula for selection, and I would be suspicious of anyone offering one. The observable shift was simpler: **the answer and the ranked list were no longer the same contest.**

Snippet-era work still had a job. A direct sentence under a useful heading gives a system something clear to work with; a table or ordered set of steps makes comparisons and processes easier to follow. But SGE also exposed the limit of treating a page like a single snippet candidate. If an answer draws on several sources, your page must be useful for the part it can genuinely explain. Write the sentence an answer can use. Do not mistake that for control over the whole answer.

## 2024: AI Overviews reached users, then ads entered the test

Google began rolling out [AI Overviews in the US on May 14, 2024](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/google-io-2024-highlights/), presenting them as the next stage of SGE. Searchers could see a generated response above conventional results. Days later, Google said it was [testing Search and Shopping ads inside AI Overviews](https://searchengineland.com/google-tests-ads-ai-overviews-440649), in a labeled sponsored section when relevant. Existing Search, Performance Max and Shopping campaigns were automatically eligible.

There is the sequence in unusually compact form: an organic answer experience arrives, then Google tests paid placements within it. “Ads follow” does not mean every Overview instantly fills with ads, or that a citation has become a purchasable organic result. It means a searcher’s first screen now has another place where a paid message can compete for attention. If you manage both search visibility and search spend, treating those as unrelated reports starts to look silly.

The click data sharpened that concern. A Seer study covering 3,119 informational queries from June 2024 to September 2025 found that [organic CTR on queries with AI Overviews fell 61%, from 1.76% to 0.61%; paid CTR fell 68%](https://searchengineland.com/google-ai-overviews-drive-drop-organic-paid-ctr-464212). Those figures describe the studied queries, not a guaranteed change to your account. They do show why an impression or a ranking cannot stand in for a visit.

ChatGPT added another place to watch when [ChatGPT Search launched with live web citations on October 31, 2024](https://techbehemoths.com/news/how-to-rank-in-chatgpt-search) for Plus and Team users. It did not turn Google, Perplexity and ChatGPT into one system. It did mean more answers could name sources before a reader chose whether to click. **Count the citation and the click separately.** One tells you whether you appeared in the answer; the other tells you whether appearing brought someone to your site.

## 2025: AI Mode split rank from citation again

Google launched [AI Mode as a US Labs opt-in on March 5, 2025](https://geotoolbox.ai/blog/what-is-google-ai-mode), then rolled it out more broadly in the US around I/O in May. Its query fan-out approach breaks a question into parallel searches and brings the findings into a response with citations and follow-up turns. A single neat keyword-to-position report is a poor description of that process.

Think about the work involved in answering a buyer’s question. The answer may need a definition, a comparison and a practical step. Those parts need not come from the page that ranks highest for the buyer’s exact wording. **Rank and citation can part company.** The sensible response is to check both, rather than assume position three buys you a mention or position nine rules one out.

The same [Seer analysis](https://searchengineland.com/google-ai-overviews-drive-drop-organic-paid-ctr-464212) found that brands cited in AI Overviews earned 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than non-cited brands. That is a useful association, not a promise that rewriting an H2 will produce either increase. It does make being named worth measuring while ordinary results compete with the answer above them.

### The checklist: work from the answer outward

I would use the timeline to set the order of work this quarter. Start with questions where an answer already appears, make the relevant pages readable, then check whether the answer uses them. Keep the list short enough to repeat.

1. **Map the questions.** Check your top 20 commercial and how-much queries and record which show an AI Overview; do not assume every query has the same results page.
2. Rewrite the relevant pages answer-first. Put one buyer question under each useful H2, answer it in the first two sentences, then add the table or steps where they help.
3. **Check access before polishing copy.** Confirm the relevant crawlers can load the pages. Googlebot access matters for Google; checks for GPTBot and other AI crawlers belong to the other answer surfaces. Use the [bot-access checklist](https://groas.com/post/how-to-get-your-business-cited-in-chatgp-2) if your team tends to stop at the copy.
4. Track cited versus not cited for the questions you mapped. Review the answers monthly rather than treating a daily rank movement as a citation result; [AI visibility measurement](https://groas.com/post/every-way-we-ve-tried-to-measure-ai-visi) needs its own record.
5. **Earn relevant off-site mentions.** Note which sites the answers already cite and work to have your business named where the same buyer question is discussed. This is the item teams most often skip: without evidence beyond their own page, even a perfectly written answer can remain only their own claim.

## 2026: The answer is still worth earning

AI Overviews already contain tested paid placements, so I would not call the citation slot permanently free. I would call this the period to do the work while a clear organic source can still be part of the answer. The history does not tell us the exact size of a future ad block or when any particular query will change. It does tell us what happens when teams wait for a tidy ranking report to warn them: the page above their result has already changed.

![Stack of shrinking free answer boxes crowded by paid ad blocks](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/13517729-4991-4885-82d8-2bbb88eb0f12.png)

My reading of the line from 2014 to now is blunt. Write the page the way snippets rewarded: name the question and answer it without a warm-up act. Check access for the surfaces you care about. Then keep watching citations, clicks and paid placement together, because an answer can change while your conventional rank holds steady.

That last part is a loop, not a one-off rewrite. groas brings paid and organic search work into that loop, with changes logged and a human strategist responsible for the direction. **Earn the citation while the answer still gives it room.** Paying for attention later is a poor substitute for writing the useful sentence now.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What did Google featured snippets change for websites in 2014?

In 2014 Google began pulling a paragraph, list or table from a page and showing it above the organic links. Pages needed a clear heading, a direct response and a format suited to the question. The trade-off was that a snippet could satisfy the searcher before the click, so winning the box did not guarantee winning the visit.

### Should a page answer only the main keyword it targets?

No. Since Google introduced People Also Ask in 2015, a page may also need to answer what something costs, how it works and how it compares with alternatives. Cover the questions a buyer actually asks and separate them with clear H2s, rather than padding the page with loosely related questions.

### Does a high organic ranking still mean my result is near the top of the page?

Not necessarily. After Google removed right-rail text ads on desktop in February 2016, highly commercial queries could show up to four text ads above organic results. Measure what appears before your result, not just where it ranks, because ads and answer features can sit ahead of a page while its ranking stays unchanged.

### Is being cited in an AI answer the same thing as ranking well?

No. A citation is a place in a composed answer, and different answer surfaces can choose different sources. A page that ranks strongly might not be used in the generated response, while another page supplies the fact or step that fits better. Check rank and citation separately rather than assuming one buys the other.

### Are there ads inside Google AI Overviews?

Google began rolling out AI Overviews in the US on May 14, 2024, and days later said it was testing Search and Shopping ads inside them in a labeled sponsored section. Existing Search, Performance Max and Shopping campaigns were automatically eligible, so a searcher's first screen now has another place where a paid message competes for attention.

### How much did click-through rates drop on queries showing AI Overviews?

A Seer study covering 3,119 informational queries from June 2024 to September 2025 found organic CTR on queries with AI Overviews fell 61%, from 1.76% to 0.61%, and paid CTR fell 68%. The figures describe the studied queries, not a guaranteed change to any account, but they show why a ranking or impression cannot stand in for a visit.

### Do brands cited in AI Overviews get more clicks?

The Seer analysis found brands cited in AI Overviews earned 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than non-cited brands. That is an association, not a promise that rewriting an H2 will produce either increase, but it makes being named in the answer worth measuring.

### What steps should a business take to get cited in AI answers?

Map your top 20 commercial and how-much queries and record which show an AI Overview. Rewrite the relevant pages answer-first with one buyer question under each H2. Confirm crawlers like Googlebot and GPTBot can load the pages, track cited versus not cited monthly, and earn off-site mentions where the same buyer question is discussed.
